We are looking to increase student engagement through the use of a digital self-assessment tool. Our hypothesis so far is that using this tool could:

1.    create student-centered and student-driven classroom experiences with learning methods that mimic the subject matter

2.  allow students to practice theories while learning them instead of breaking the learning process into disjointed “theoretical” and “practical” stages

3.    allow students to understand the Intended Learning Outcomes of a course

4.    allow students to familiarize themselves with the assessment criteria

5.    allow students to take steps towards achieving those ILOs

We adjusted an existing tool used in some Finnish upper secondary schools and plan to pilot the tool on courses starting in September 2022. The initial results and findings will be shared in the ITK Forum in October 2022.

We hope that the tool could aid student empowerment and engagement, help teachers tailor their courses to the needs of students, and provide useful data for curriculum development. Please see the attachment for further details and screenshots of digital self-assessment tool.
